The Detroit News ran a great piece by Chad Livengood that states Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s secretive non-profit NERD Fund has been picking up the $800 a night tab for Detroit Emergency Financial Manager Kevyn Orr to live the Kwame Kilpatrick lifestyle at the opulent Westin Book Cadillac Hotel in downtown Detroit.

Kevyn Orr’s spokesman, Bill Nowling confirmed the arrangement to the Free Press.

The NERD Fund, which stands for New Energy to Reinvent and Diversify Fund is a 501(c)4 not-for-profit that raises money from private donors who are not legally required to disclose their identities and as the Detroit Free Press points out in a similar article, “has come under scrutiny because of its role in funding the governor’s operations.”

Public Act 436 which governs how the Emergency Financial Manager gets paid states Orr’s “compensation shall be paid by this state” and can be further supplemented by “private funds” provided to the state. It also says “compensation for security personnel will be the obligation of the city.”

Detroit taxpayers are on the hook for Orr being driven around in a chauffeur driven 2012 Cadillac Escalade and two Michigan State Police for bodyguards.
