GOP Says 13 Banks Spied On MAGA Supporters And Alleged January 6th Insurrectionists For Feds
Republicans in Congress allege 13 banks spied on MAGA supporters for the US government. They claim the government focused on January 6 insurrectionists looking for ‘extremism’ indicators.
The House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government. Yes, that’s really a subcommittee, is led by top Republican Jim Jordan, R-OH. Jordan and other Trump supporting members of congress are investigating ‘collusion’ between U.S. banks and federal agencies in the aftermath of the Capitol riot.
Jordan claims the Biden administration colluded with banks by searching for “extremism” indicators. According to members of congress. “extremist” indicators included purchase of a religious textor Bible scripture. It also included searches including the terms “MAGA” and “TRUMP.”
The committee has targeted Bank of America, Chase and U.S. Bank. They are also investigating Wells Fargo, Citi Bank and Truist. The goal of the committee is expose how the U.S. Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and the FBI worked together.
The committee has also asked Charles Schwab, HSBC, MUFG and PayPal, to turn over documents and communications with FinCEN and the FBI.
Did Banks Spy On MAGA Supporters?
Investigators claim FinCEN and the FBI received data on 211 individuals from the Bank of America in a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) on January 17, 2021.
However, the SAR was only sent after the FBI and FinCEN asked the banks to scour customer transactions for key terms like “MAGA” and “Trump.”
Bank of America sent the data of the 211 individuals within the threshold.
FinCEN asked Bank of America to send over any weapons-related transactions. Four Bank of America customers out of the original 211 qualified.
This prompted ‘criminal background queries’ into the four customers.
Later, four federal agents were also deployed to three FBI field offices to investigate those individuals.
After the investigations were complete, the FBI uploaded their findings to a portal.
These individuals met a thresholds set by the FBI and FinCEN. However, they were not actually being investigated for an alleged crime.
FinCEN also suggested that banks review transactions at sporting and recreational supplies stores.
GOP Expands Their Investigation Of “MAGA Persecution”
Officials also warned banks of ‘extremism’ indicators like the purchase of a religious text. In addition, officials asked for search terms including MAGA and TRUMP.
In March, Jordan also sent letters to GoFundMe and Eventbrite, The GOP lead committee also asked that they cooperate with committee’s ongoing investigation.
House Republicans say that the federal government urged the crowdfunding platforms to ‘comb’ through their personal transactions report charges on the basis of protected political and religious expression.
The federal government also created ‘profiles’ on the American people kept in a ‘secret portal’ shared with companies to identify customer’s levels of extremism, Jordan has said.
An interface shared between over 650 companies and federal officials holds a ‘secret portal’ containing sensitive data on American citizens, the Ohio Republican warned at a March 6 hearing.
