CFPB Sues Rocket Homes And Real Estate Brokerage Over Kickback Scheme

Rocket HomesRocket Homes remains defiant. Like usual, they are denying the allegations and calling them a distortion of reality.

The CFPB said on Monday that it has sued Rocket over alleged violations of the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), to include illegal kickbacks and the steering of mortgage borrowers to Rocket Mortgage.

CFPB alleges Rocket Homes “pressured” real estate agents and brokers. They says Rocket pressured brokers not to share valuable information with their clients concerning products not offered by Rocket Mortgage.

The CFPB press release states Rocket engaged in a kickback scheme that discouraged homebuyers from comparison shopping and getting the best deal.

The agency is seeking to bring defendants into compliance with the law. They also want to impose civil money penalties over the alleged scheme.

Naturally, the company denied the CFPB’s allegations and calling the lawsuit. In their usual canned answer stated their typical canned response when they get busted. They accuse the CFPB of lying and trying to desperately grab a headline:

“The CFPB’s allegations are false and a distortion of reality. The accusation that homebuyers paid more when working with Rocket Homes is a lie. Additionally, the notion that Rocket Homes penalized real estate brokers or agents for helping clients compare rates and choose the best lender for them is also a lie.”
