Senator Bernie Sanders And His Wife Hire High Profile Lawyers In FBI Bank Fraud Investigation 

Senator Bernie Sanders and his wife have hired prominent defense attorneys amid an FBI investigation into a loan Jane Sanders obtained to expand Burlington College while she was its president. MFI-Miami first wrote about Jane Sanders’ mismanagement of Burlington College in 2016.

Politico Magazine reported the Sanders have hired lawyers to defend them in the probe. Sanders’ top adviser Jeff Weaver told CBS News the couple has sought legal protection over federal agents’ allegations. Jane Sanders is accused of distorting donor levels on a 2010 loan application on behalf of the college.

The FBI is investigating allegations that Sanders used his office to pressure the bank to approve the loan.

Senator Bernie Sanders has hired Burlington attorney Rich Cassidy. Whereas Jane Sanders has hired high-profile Washington defense attorney Larry Robbins. Robbins counseled I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby.

Jane Sanders’ mismanagement and push for the costly land acquisition was cited by the college when it shut down in 2016.

Brady Toensing of Burlington filed the complaint to the USAO for Vermont. He was also a chairman for the Trump campaign in Vermont. He told CBS News that he filed the complaint in January 2016. Therefore, the Obama Administration initiated the investigation. Toensing also stated that President Obama appointed the United States Attorney for Vermont. 

Senator Bernie Sanders called the investigation nonsense:

Yes, it is nonsense.

Sanders claims Toensing filed the complaint due to political reasons. The Senator alleges Toensing does this all of the time and has gone after a number of Democrats and progressives in Vermont. 

He also added that the claim is baseless and false. Weaver also said that Burlington College’s Board of Trustees approved the loan.

Bernie Sanders was mayor of Burlington, Vermont before going to Congress. He regards the claims as a political game levied against him after his run for president in the 2016 primary election. The election served as a platform that transformed the small-state senator into an influential voice in American liberal politics.
