The threats follow a mass shooting in nearby Maine in late October that left 18 people dead.

According to the press release, Anderson was arrested on December 9th. He made an initial appearance in federal court on December 11th. He was released with conditions on December 14th.

Anderson also has no criminal record.

As a result, the judge set forth several conditions for Anderson’s release:

• He is to avoid contact with any presidential candidate and their political campaigns.
• Anderson must continue to receiving mental health treatment.
• He must also take all of his prescribed medications.
• Anderson must remove all guns from his home.

Anderson faces a maximum of five years in prison and up to three years of supervised release. In addition, he also faces a fine of up to $250,000 for each charge.

The Attorney General’s office did not name the three presidential candidates in its press release. However, presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy claims he was one of the candidates Anderson threatened.

The campaign says they received two text messages from Anderson. One threatened to shoot the candidate in the head and the other threatened to kill everyone at the event and desecrate their corpses.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement:

“We have seen an increase in threats of violence against public officials and those seeking public office across the country, and I have made clear that these types of illegal threats undermine the function of our democracy. We will not tolerate illegal threats of violence directed at public officials or those seeking public office.”
