Michigan Tenure Commission Suspended Detroit Judge Kahlilia Davis For 6 Years in 2023. Now She Is Attempting To Regain Her Seat.
The Michigan Supreme Court suspended former Detroit Judge Kahlilia Davis for six years in 2023. They cited rampant ethical violations during her suspension hearing in 2023. Yet, Davis is no brazenly running to regain a seat on the 36th District Court in Detroit.
Davis is among six candidates vying for two seats on the 36th District Court. The primary election is set for Aug. 6, 2024
The Michigan Department of State Bureau of Elections (BOE) will soon determine if Davis is eligible to run.
BOE spokesperson told Steve Neavling at the Detroit Metro Times:
The BOE has until June 7, 2024 to decide if Davis can run.
The Bizarre Behavior Of The Suspended Detroit Judge
In June 2023, the Michigan Supreme Court suspended Davis for six years. The court found Davis displayed a pattern of misconduct that was beyond the pale for a member of our judiciary.
The Detroit Free Press stated she often cited ominous Bible verses. She would also arrive late to work and disappeared during the day. Most the time, she didn’t even show up at all.
Davis allegedly told the owner of a car legally parked in a handicap space at LA Fitness in 2019:
The Michigan Supreme Court also accused Davis of intentionally disconnecting courtroom monitoring equipment. They also accused her of missing weeks of court and abusing contempt powers. In addition, they accused her of dismissing cases because of personal beefs and for unlawfully jailing a process server.
The Supreme Court suspended Davis in June 2020.
The Michigan Supreme Court Determines Davis Is Mentally Unfit To Sit On The Bench
In September 2022, the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission determined Davis was “unfit” for the bench. The commission said her “egregious” acts of misconduct made her:
“incorrigible and incapable of conforming her behavior to the standards required of a judge.”
The commission recommended a six-year ban.
The Michigan Supreme Court agreed to the ban. The Justices said Davis, “besmirched the judiciary’s reputation and prejudiced the administration of justice.”
The Justices wrote:
Davis’s term expired in January 2023. However, she didn’t serve a vast majority of her time on the bench.
She tried running for reelection in 2022. However, the Michigan Secretary of State removed her from the ballot for lying on her affidavit of identity.
