Federal Judge Thomas Ludington Busted For Driving Super Drunk In Northern Michigan After Almost Flipping His Car

Federal Judge Thomas Ludington has taken a leave of absence from the bench in the Eastern District of Michigan. In October, Michigan State Police arrested Ludington on October 3, 2025 while driving “super drunk.”
The Federal Court in Detroit says Ludington will taking a leave of absence pending the resolution of his arrest.
However, it comes 5 months after his arrest. It also comes weeks after The Detroit News reported Ludington’s arrest on Oct. 3, 2025. So, why the coverup? It’s anyone’s guess but we live in Trump’s America now where political coverups are all the rage.
The News says the 72-year-old judge struck two traffic signs and crashed on a rural curved road near Petoskey, Michigan. Michigan State Police charged him with operating his Cadillac with a blood-alcohol level of 0.17 or more.
A driver is considered inebriated with a blood-alcohol level above .08% under Michigan law.
The law also says anyone as “Super Drunk” if they have a o.17% blood alcohol level.
“Super drunk” constitutes a separate range of penalties and jail time. Ludington reportedly registered a 0.27%. This is more than three times the legal limit.
The Federal Court in Detroit isssued a statement saying:
Video from Michigan State Policelast week showed Ludington at the crash site and his subsequent arrest.
The Michigan State Police said Ludington was sitting in the car even after officers arrived. He told one trooper that he “wasn’t sure why (the airbags) deployed.”
Ludington Claimed He Had Not Been Drinking But Reeked Of Alcohol
Troopers also said that Ludington got out of the car. He then appeared to have a hard time understanding police instructions. When asked how much he had to drink that night, he hesitated for a second. Then claimed, “Uh, nothing tonight.”
The video shows the trooper then tried to administer three sobriety tests. Ludington failed all three. The trooper then asked him to pick a number between 19 and 21. Ludington answered “15.”
The trooper showed him the damage to the right side of his vehicle. He then told Ludington that someone had called and reported seeing him strike two signs. Ludington told the trooper that he had no memory of that.
The video also shows the trooper unsuccessfully attempted multiple times to get a reading on the preliminary breath test. The video shows that Ludington was so drunk that he couldn’t understand the instructions. At that point, the MSP placed him under arrest.
The Trooper’s body cam footage shows him telling Ludington:
Ludington was appointed in 2006 by former President George W. Bush. He handles civil and criminal cases at the federal court in Bay City, Michigan.
Court documents show Ludington is considered a first-time offender so the OWI charge is a misdemeanor. If convicted, he would face up to 93 days in jail and up to $500 in fines. Ludington faces up to 180 days in jail if the court convicts him of being super drunk. He could also lose his license for one year.
The court has scheduled Ludington to appear in court on April 6th for a status conference.
