Psychologist Paul Smith allegedly billed Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan over $5,000,000 for services never performed.

Michigan psychologist Paul Smith has been indicted for fraudulently swindling Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan over $5,000,000.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan claims they lost approximately $5,000,000 as a result of Smith’s false claims.

Smith allegedly submitted approximately 1,700 false claims for neuropsychological testing and 140 false claims for psychological testing between January 2015 through February 2018.

Prosecutors state Smith billed BCBSM for allegedly providing neuropsychological testing 21 times for a single patient within a single year. He also submitted claims stating he provided 24 hours of professional service on each occasion.

BCBSM paid Smith approximately $61,000 based on his invoices for that patient. Consequently, BCBSM lost approximately $5,000,000 as a result of Smith’s false claims.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt.
