Former Postal Worker Convicted For Threatening To Go Postal On Employees of the New York State Department of Labor
A federal jury in Brooklyn convicted a former postal worker of threatening to go postal. Quadri Garnes threatened to kill employees of the New York Department of Labor. The verdict followed a five-day trial. Garnes now faces up to five years in prison for making terrorist threats.
The former postal worker was employed as a mail carrier for the USPS in Brooklyn from March 26, 2022 to May 29, 2022. The USPS fired Garnes after crashing his postal truck into two vehicles. The postal service official fired Garnes on May 31, 2022.
As a result, Garnes applied for unemployment benefits. However, the New York Department of Labor denied his claim. They claimed he had only worked for the USPS for less than 60 days. Thus, he was ineligible to receive benefits.
On September 29, 2022, Garnes called the DOL and was given the bad news.
Garnes responded by threatened to shoot and kill employees of the USPS and DOL. He then went on a 45-minute rant on a recorded call with two DOL employees.
Garnes’s statements included:
If I go back to the post office, I’m gonna shoot somebody.
Y’all gonna make me go to jail for killing somebody.
Do the city want me to kill five or six different people?
Somebody might get shot today coming out of Department of Labor.
Law Enforcement Alerted Over Former Postal Worker’s Threats
The federal investigation of Garnes revealed he was convicted of first-degree rape in 1994 and convicted of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon in 2004,
The threats of the former postal worker triggered an immediate response by the DOL. They then alerted the New York State Police and Postal Inspectors. Postal Ispectors took precautions against Garnes’s return to the postal facility and athe DOL office. NYPD arrested Garnes approximately two weeks after making his threats.
