The Trump Fraud Investigation Of New York AG Letitia James Hits Road Block. Prosecutors Say They Have Insufficient Evidence Of Mortgage Fraud
The Trump fraud investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James is at a standstill. Federal prosecutors say they have enough evidence to get a conviction if the case were to go to trial. Now Trump is having one of his classic autistic trust fund baby meltdowns.
Why? Trump wants revenge for bringing a civil fraud case against Donald Trump after his first term as president.
Grand Jury Won’t Issue An Indictment
The White House continued to push the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia to seek an indictment against James. However, a grand jury has been hearing evidence. Yet, so far prosecutors have declined to seek an indictment.
Prosecutors said there is not enough evidence to show that James misled a financial institution.
Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte sent a criminal referral letter to the Justice Department in April. He alleged, that James:
Ironically, Pulte’s billionaire were busted doing the same thing with their Florida and Michigan properties.
Pulte’s letter US Attorney General Pam Bondi referred to three properties: James’ home in Virginia and two in New York.
The allegations center on a document related to the Virginia home James purchased in 2023. James’s attorney says mortgage records incorrectly showed that the property would be her primary residence. They say that it was a mistake.
They also say that it’s the only document that indicated the primary residence designation. James’s attorney Abbe Lowell said the rest of the loan documents accurately say the home wouldn’t be James’ primary residence.
Pulte is leading the charge to have James indicted.
In an April 24 letter to Bondi, James’ attorney Abbe Lowell described the criminal referral as:
Did Trump Fire US Attorney Eric Siebert Or Did He Quit?
Even with pressure from the Trump Administration, US Attorney for Eastern Virginia Eric Siebert could not get an indictment. So, Trump does what spoiled trust fund baby does. He throws a temper tantrum.
Trump then launched a campaign to oust Siebert from his job. Trump’s erratic behavior and threats to oust him were too much and Siebert and his deputy resign in protest. However, that isn’t what Trump told reporters. He told them he fired Siebert.
The administration’s effort to oust him from Siebert from his job also represents a further erosion of norms. The DOJ has historically run independently from the White House regarding prosecutorial decisions. Critics say the White House is weaponizing the DOJ. Especially now, that Trump wants it used for the obvious purposes of retaliation against his adversaries.
