Trump’s New FHFA Director Accuses New York AG Letitia James Of Mortgage Fraud
The Federal Housing Financing Agency has accused New York AG Letitia James of mortgage fraud. However, she claims the accusations are a “baseless retaliation” in response to her convicting Donald Trump.
Why It Matters
FHFA referred the case against James to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. The agency alleges she falsified records to obtain a mortgage in 2023. In turn, James has strongly denied any wrongdoing.
Critics claim Trump is systematically targeting his critics. However, the Trump Administration is arguing he is simply redressing wrongs committed during the Biden administration.
What To Know
James said told the media:
However, according to legal filings, James had amended her records. A “specific power of attorney” document signed by James on August 13, 2023 showed her intent to change her residence. The attorney general authorized her relative, Shamice Thompson-Hairston, to act on her behalf in the real estate transaction.
FHFA’s Accusations Against James
Pulte said James owned a property in Norfolk, Virginia in 2023 that she claimed was her primary residence. New York law states New York residency is required for her job.
Pulte also said that between 1983 and 2000, James purchased a property with her father as co-signer. Her also alleges she listed them as husband and wife. Pulte also alleges that James falsely claimed a Brooklyn property she owns had four units rather than five in 2021.
Property records show James and Thompson-Hairston are listed in “joint tenancy with right of survivorship as at common law.”
Thompson-Hairston signed both the mortgage document and later signed another document, making herself attorney of fact.
New York State law states:
Experts have told Newsweek that James could face fraud charges. However, it appears she will face political ramifications. The allegations could be a legal path to have her removed from office.
In 2024, James was able to convince a New York state court that Trump committed civil fraud. As a result, Trump was ordered to pay $454 million had falsely inflated the value of his properties. Trump has consistently denied wrongdoing and is appealing the decision.
