Wayne County Circuit Court JA Accused Of Embezzling $60,000 From Judge Deborah Thomas
The Michigan Attorney General has charged a Wayne County Circuit Court Judicial Assistant of embezzlement. The Michigan AG’s office says Steven Allen embezzled more than $60,000 from Wayne County Judge Deborah Thomas.
Prosecutors have charged Allen, 42, of Detroit with embezzlement and using a computer to commit a crime. In addition, they charged him with forgery of bank bills and promissory notes.
Prosecutors have also accused him of stealing or retaining without consent a financial transaction device.
Allen was a judicial assistant in the 3rd Circuit Court in Wayne County from 2018 through 2022.
Prosecutors did not identify the judge. However, he worked for Judge Deborah Thomas.
How The Wayne County Circuit Court JA Ripped Off Judge Thomas
State prosecutors allege Allen illegally obtained an ATM card associated with the judge’s accounts. They also claim he wrongfully made withdrawals and purchases. In addition, prosecutors claim he was also forging checks to victim to conceal his thefts.
Judge Thomas became aware of the missing money when she was notified of delinquent taxes on a secondary property. Allen pocked the money the judge gave him to pay the taxes. He showed the judge fake checks made out to Wayne County.
The Michigan AG’s Office states the alleged embezzlement was discovered in 2022. As a result, they launched an investigation began in July of that year.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel told the media:
A court appointed attorney entered a plea of not guilty while Allen stood mute. The court set a $50,000 personal bond. The court has scheduled a preliminary exam for February 5, 2024.
