Prosecutors Have Charged Attorney For Smuggling Drugs

Michigan Prosecutors Have Charged Attorney For Smuggling Drugs Into A Prison For Her Client

Prosecutors have charged a Michigan attorney for smuggling drugs into the Central Michigan Correctional Facility. She now faces 2o years in prison for attempting to smuggle drugs into a prison.

Gratiot County prosecutors have charged attorney Jayne Ashley Carver on felony charges.

Gratiot County Prosecutor Laura Bever said the charges stem from an August 4th incident. The Michigan Department of Corrections say Carver was in the prison for an attorney-client visit. It is then that guards spotted her passing a package to a prisoner.

MDOC officials searched the prisoner and found 211 strips of paper film. The film contained the narcotic Suboxone. In addition, guards found 68 grams of a brown, waxy substance and 45 grams of a white powder.

The Michigan State Police later searched the attorney’s vehicle and found more Suboxone and white powder.

Police have charged Carver with delivery of methamphetamine and delivery of controlled substances. In addition, they also charged her with bringing contraband into a prison and possession of a narcotic.

Gratiot County Prosecutor Laura Bever told the Detroit Free Press:

“This is incredibly serious. Attorneys are expected to uphold higher standards in terms of how we relate to our clients.”

Carver, who according to her State Bar of Michigan lists Carver as a criminal defense lawyer. She also specializes in criminal appeals. The Detroit Free Press state she did not respond to telephone and email messages seeking comment.

Bever said the court has not scheduled Carver’s appearance in circuit court.

MDOC Director Heidi Washington told the media:

“This recovery protected countless individuals from potential illness, overdose, or violence associated with the sale of these drugs or from those under the influence.”
