Failed extortionist turned law school student Daniel Vander Ley

Last summer, we posted an article about the dipshit Vander Ley brothers running an extortion scheme in Detroit. Well, it appears Daniel Vander Ley didn’t like MFI-Miami writing about his and his brother shaking down businesses. So, Vander Ley sent us an email threatening to sue us for defamation. Why? We’ll he didn’t like that we referred to his scheme as an “alleged extortion scheme.”

However, others called it one as well. Both the Detroit Free Press and WJR did as well. Dozens of other media outlets also ran the story about the brothers being sued by the Michigan AG’s office.

Vander Ley is a first year law school student at the University of Toledo in Ohio. So, he thinks he’s some seasoned litigator.

The Vander Ley brothers have quite few hurdles to overcome to sue us. But the major issue for them is credibility issue. Last year, the Michigan AG’s office sued both Daniel and Eric Vander Ley. Why? For doing exactly what we reported they did. MFI-Miami isn’t the only outlet who wrote about it and referred get rich scheme as an extortion scheme.

Vander Ley also has other logistical problems with suing MFI-Miami. However, that’s for Daniel Vander Ley to discover.

Why Did The Michigan AG Sue The Dipshit Vander Ley Brothers?

The lawsuit claims that brothers Eric and Daniel Vander Ley formed 17 fraudulent LLCs. However, they used the exact names of well-known suburban Detroit businesses:

“Defendants Eric and Daniel Vander Ley formed these clone companies to capture the business names and harass the business owners to obtain money. The Vander Leys’ actions have caused severe damage to these small businesses, and the companies should be dissolved so they can no longer be used for such nefarious purposes.”

The suit seeks to formally dissolve all 17 Vander Ley’s companies and assess an undisclosed amount of fines.

The lawsuit also states that the brothers took advantage of companies that weren’t in good standing with the state.

They then used those companies to accuse the original business owners of “copyright violations” and other unfounded legal claims.

The brothers would then harass and attempt to shake down the businesses for money.

How It All Began

The ordeal began at the Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop in suburban Detroit.

Shop owner Jon Hughes tried to give Eric Vander Ley a 1099 form. Vander Ley worked at the bike shop in the summer of 2022 until he was fired.

Afterwards, the Vander Leys began a campaign of harassment that led to a protection order being filed.

Vander Ley’s brother, Daniel, had bought the name in August 2023. He did this because the company had fallen out of good standing with LARA.

The Attorney General’s suit also states Vander Ley sent Hughes a cease and desist letter in August 2024. Letter demanded Hughes to stop using the name “Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop.”

He demanded that Hughes sign and return an enclosed agreement. The agreement required Hughes to pay him $2,500 “in lieu of litigation”.

He also started contacting Hughes’ business connections and threatening them with lawsuits. In one case, Vander Ley email a business development manager Jamis Bikes and demanding he stop doing business with Hughes.

The brothers then began buying a total of 17 other business names of other Ferndale businesses.

In another legal settlement attempt, The Vander Ley brothers demanded $500 an hour from Urbanrest owner Zachary Typinski to discuss buying back the name of the company.

Naturally, Typinski’s attorney turned him down. So, the Vander Leys began harassing Urbanrest employees and customers.

At one point, according to the lawsuit, Eric stormed into the brewery demanding to see the business’ liquor license.
