Federal Prosecutors Indict Disbarred Florida Lawyer Michael Brady Scomo On Three Counts Of Failure To Pay Taxes
Federal prosecutors in central Florida have indicted disbarred Florida Lawyer Michael Brady Scoma. Prosecutors have charged with three counts of failure to pay taxes. If convicted, Scoma faces up to three years in federal prison.
Court records indicate Scoma is a former personal injury lawyer. Prosecutors allege that between 2013 and 2019, Scoma understated his income to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Based on his reported income, Scoma owed the IRS $702,341.76 in tax liabilities. However, the IRS unsuccessfully attempted to collect the outstanding amount from him multiple times.
Eventually, Scoma agreed to refinance his home and use the proceeds to pay his tax liabilities. However, he never did. Once Scoma completed the refinancing, he used the resulting $800,000 for personal expenses including gambling instead of paying his tax liabilities.
The Florida Bar suspended Scoma’s law license in 2021 for 5 years. The Florida Bar alleged Scoma used client funds for purposes other than what they were intended. This resulted in significant shortages in the firm’s trust account.
Scoma also delayed the disbursement of settlement funds. In addition, he failed to maintain the minimum trust records. He also failed follow the minimum trust accounting procedures. (Case No: SC21-1229)
