New York Governor Kathy Hochul Named 2023 U-Haul Salesperson Of The Year As A Record Number Of People Flee New York State

Governor Kathy HochulThe United Census Bureau says a record number of people fled New York in 2023. The mass exodus of people is much faster than any other state in the nation.

As a result, U-Haul has named New York Governor Kathy Hochul as the 2023 U-Haul Salesperson of the Year.

U-Haul CEO Joe Shoen said,

“Governor Hochul has been a valuable unofficial member of the U-Haul team. I want to personally thank Madam Governor for all her hard work. Her tireless efforts have continued to help keep U-Haul the #1 moving company in North America!”

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that New York lost residents at the largest rate in 2023 than any other state. This is despite an overall rise in the U.S. population.

Governor Kathy Hochul The bureau also released a map showing the percentage change in state populations between July 2022 and July 2023. New York stands out as the only state colored a deep orange. Orange is the label for a percentage change of -.5% or more. New York lost roughly 101,984 residents in the first half of 2023.

Still, the 0.5% drop marks a much smaller decline than last year’s 180,000-person loss. However, New York’s population remains the fourth largest in the U.S. The state currently has a population of 19,571,216 residents. This is behind California, Texas and Florida.

For comparison, New York’s population was 20,202,320 in 2020. The loss is bigger than the population of the city of Detroit.

The census determines how many congressional seats each state gets. If this trends continues, New York could lose three U.S. House seats in 2032.

New York was only one of eight states to see its population decline over this period. California lost 75,423 people. Hawaii lost 4,261 people. Illinois lost 32,826 people. Louisiana lost 14,274 residents and Pennsylvania has lost 10,408 residents.

Governor Hochul has continued the legacy of people leaving New York started by former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
