Jarred by a Sun Sentinel report on monopolization of the county’s tax lien auction by big banks and hedge funds, Broward commissioners on Tuesday ordered staff to study ways to make the process fairer and report back in August.

From the dais, Mayor Kristin Jacobs said she found the newspaper’s findings, reported Sunday, “absolutely shocking.”

Later, speaking to a reporter, Jacobs said she was upset that the “very corporations that raped our county and our country,” devastating the economy, may now be profiting from the inability of struggling homeowners to pay their taxes.
